Routes

The new map and routing features in DayBack are currently in preview.

If you'd like these features enabled for preview in your DayBack, please get in touch. (Maps, routing, and drive times require DayBack's Plus plan.)

DayBack offers an example set of custom app actions that allow you to map and optimize the route of a resource's appointments. This set of actions is intended to be a starting point for customized routing behaviors, such as reordering appointments to create the most efficient route.

You can download the code here and add it to your DayBack. If you're new to custom actions, you can learn more in our overview.

How Routing Works in this Example

Since every customer has unique routing requirements, we’ve set up this example with a standard set of rules that can be easily customized to fit your specific needs.

  1. Accessing Routes
    • A blue map icon appears next to each resource (person, truck, or equipment) in supported views.
    • Routes are available in DayBack’s Pivot List and Pivot Schedule views (found in the Resource menu at the top).
  1. Creating a Route
    • Click the blue map icon next to a resource to generate a route.
    • The route includes all items currently in view, even if they span multiple days.
    • To limit routing to a single day, set the Resource menu’s day range to one.
  1. Comparing Routes
    • Shift-click a second route to compare it with the first.
    • Watch this video for an alternative approach to route optimization.
  1. How Appointments are Ordered
    • Items are routed in the order they appear on the calendar.
    • All-day events appear first in the route.
    • We've customized this action to re-order events and even move them between resources to create an optimal route. This is customized for each deployment since everyone's criteria for "optimal" is different, and may include skill matching, workload requirements, and buffering between appointments. Please get in touch if you 'd like help with implemented a custom routing setup!
  1. Address Requirements & Geocoding
    • Only items with a geocoded address are included in the route.
    • If an item has an address but hasn’t been geocoded, a warning will appear.
  1. Distance & Round Trips
    • Below the resource’s name, you’ll see the total route distance.
    • Clicking the distance will remove the route.
    • The action supports miles or kilometers (adjustable in settings).
    • Routes are round trips, starting and ending at the resource’s location (a new resource-specific field in DayBack).
